Red Sox trade pitcher Clay Buchholz to Phillies

BOSTON — The Red Sox have traded right-hander Clay Buchholz to the Philadelphia Phillies for minor league second baseman Josh Tobias.

Buchholz was the odd man out in a Boston rotation that added Chris Sale this offseason. Now 32, Buchholz pitched a no-hitter in 2007 in his second major league game. He is a two-time All-Star but he has been inconsistent through his career. In all, he is 81-61 with a 3.96 ERA in parts of 10 big league seasons. He was 8-10 with a 4.78 ERA this year.

Giants fined $200,000 for walkie-talkie use

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The NFL has fined the New York Giants, coach Ben McAdoo and moved the team’s fourth-round pick in next year’s draft to the end of the round because the rookie coach used a walkie-talkie for about five plays during the fourth quarter of a game against Dallas a little more than a week ago.

The franchise was fined $150,000 and McAdoo $50,000.

The Giants’ fourth-round selection in the 2017 draft will be moved to the end of the fourth round, after any compensatory picks in that round, but no more than 12 selection spots from where they finished in draft order for that round.

McAdoo used the walkie-talkie early in the fourth quarter after his communications system malfunctioned.

The NFL’s policy prohibits the use of two-way radios by coaches to communicate plays during a game. The Giants won the game 10-7. The drive on which McAdoo used the walkie-talkie ended in a Dallas interception of Eli Manning.

High winds cancel Women’s World Cup race

COURCHEVEL, France — A women’s World Cup giant slalom was canceled Tuesday because of strong winds after the first run had been aborted and then rescheduled.

The first run was stopped after 19 racers had gone down the course. But a few minutes before the rescheduled run had been set to start, the International Ski Federation called it off.

The initial decision to restart the race did not please defending overall World Cup champion Lara Gut.

“Dear @fisalpine ... we love to race but we are not windsurfers and we don’t have wings,” Gut wrote on Twitter.

Group postpones meeting over St. Louis stadium plan

ST. LOUIS — A group hoping to build a new soccer stadium in St. Louis says it is postponing its planned meeting with a state finance board so it can meet with Missouri’s incoming governor, who is critical of the project.

Principles of the stadium-minded SC STL were to meet Tuesday with the Missouri Development Finance Board over a request to approve $40 million in state tax credits for the stadium.

But on Monday, Republican Gov.-elect Eric Greitens announced he opposes taxpayer money to help build the new stadium, calling the project “nothing more than welfare for millionaires.”
