Colorado Mines QB Dvorak named top D-II player

Colorado School of Mines quarterback Justin Dvorak has won the Harlon Hill Trophy, given to the top player in Division II.

Dvorak, who is from Tomball, Texas, passed for 4,584 yards and 53 touchdowns and ran for another eight scores. He helped the Orediggers (10-3) win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and reach the second round of the NCAA playoffs.

The senior received 185 points in a vote of Division II sports information directors to beat Northwest Missouri State quarterback Kyle Zimmerman (113 points).

Dvorak is the second Hill Trophy winner from the Colorado Mines, joining quarterback Chad Friehauf in 2004. It is the fourth time since 2006 an RMAC player won the Hill. Chadron State’s Danny Woodhead won it in 2006 and ’07.

‘Attacking Vikings’ maintain their dominance

VAL GARDENA, Italy — Kjetil Jansrud and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde finished 1-2 in a super-G on Friday to extend Norway’s recent dominance in Val Gardena – and the World Cup speed events in general.

It could have been another podium sweep for the “Attacking Vikings” but Aksel Lund Svindal wasted a fast start to his run with two major mistakes, ultimately skiing through a gate and not finishing.

Jansrud clocked 1 minute, 31.99 seconds down the Saslong course, finishing 0.06 seconds ahead of Kilde and 0.13 in front of Canadian veteran Erik Guay.

Slovenia’s Stuhec wins World Cup combined race

VAL D’ISERE, France – Ilka Stuhec moved from third to first and won a World Cup Alpine combined race on Friday for her third victory of the season.

Sitting third after the downhill run, the Slovenian finished .12 seconds ahead of Michelle Gisin and .16 clear of Soffia Goggia.

Stuhec’s two other wins this season were in downhill, both in Lake Louise. Prior to this season, she had not placed higher than fourth in a race.

Defending overall World Cup champion Lara Gut was sixth after the downhill and went off course in the slalom. Her failure to finish cost her valuable points as she bids to close the gap on World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin.

Shiffrin is skipping the speed events in Val d’Isere and will return for Tuesday’s giant slalom in the nearby French resort of Courchevel.

Agudelo, Feilhaber, Nagbe back on U.S. roster

CHICAGO – Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber, Portland midfielder Darlington Nagbe and New England forward Juan Agudelo are returning to the U.S. national team for its first training camp under coach Bruce Arena.

Seattle forward Clint Dempsey, sidelined since Aug. 21 by an irregular heartbeat, is likely to attend camp in a limited capacity, and Arena hopes he could be in shape to play during World Cup qualifiers in late March against Honduras and Panama.

DaMarcus Beasley, at 34 a veteran of four World Cups, also will attend. He spent the last 2½ seasons with Houston.

The 31-year-old Feilhaber, a member of the 2010 U.S. World Cup roster under Bob Bradley, appeared in just three games under Jurgen Klinsmann, who was fired last month after losses to Mexico and Costa Rica that opened the final round of 2018 qualifying.
