CU’s Webb, Lewis waive rights to preliminary hearing
BOULDER – University of Colorado quarterback Jordan Webb and former Buffaloes lineman Alexander Lewis have waived their rights to preliminary hearings in an assault case.
The Daily Camera reported a judge granted the waivers Monday.
Witnesses told police the two were involved in a fight in Boulder in May with Air Force Academy cadet Lee Bussey. Witnesses say Bussey’s head was pushed into a brick wall before he was pushed to the ground and punched.
Lewis and Webb are charged with second-degree assault. Lewis also is charged with two counts of harassment. Lewis has said he intends to transfer to Nebraska.
Lewis is due for arraignment July 26. Webb is due for arraignment Aug. 2.

Recent conference realignments become official
Happy realignment day!
It certainly was for the Atlantic Coast Conference, which welcomed Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Notre Dame to the league with a celebratory news conference/flag planting in New York City. Other leagues took a more low-key approach.
Here’s a look at just a few of the dozens of conference switches in Division I that became official on July 1.
American Athletic Conference opened for business, and Memphis, Central Florida, SMU and Houston left Conference USA to become members of the conference formerly known as the Big East.
The new Big East is up and running. The basketball-centric league was created by old Big East members Villanova, Georgetown, St. John’s, Providence, Seton Hall, Marquette and DePaul. Joining them on Monday were Butler, Xavier and Creighton.
Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion and Texas-San Antonio all became members of Conference USA as the league restocked after being gutted by the American.
Georgia State, UT-Arlington and Texas State are now in the Sun Belt, as the conference restocked after being gutted by C-USA.
The Mountain West adds Utah State and San Jose State from the Western Athletic Conference, which is now out of the football business.
Coming in 2014: Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten. Louisville to the ACC. East Carolina, Tulsa and Tulane to the American. Georgia Southern and Appalachian State join the Sun Belt.

NHL players inching closer to a return to the Olympics
NEW YORK – NHL players are just a slap shot away from returning to the Olympics next year.
While a deal hasn’t been reached yet between the NHL, the union and the International Ice Hockey Federation to send the league’s players to Sochi, a long meeting Monday pushed the sides much closer to an agreement.
Bettman, union leader Donald Fehr and IIHF President Rene Fasel met for more than five hours Monday at league headquarters to work on a deal that would allow NHL players to compete at the 2014 games in Russia. This would be the fifth Olympics for the NHL.
Coyotes future in Phoenix hangs in the balance
GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Phoenix Coyotes’ four-year bid for stability will come to a close soon.
With tonight’s Glendale City Council meeting, the Coyotes will find out if the city will approve an arena lease agreement with Renaissance Sports & Entertainment, which has an agreement in place to buy the franchise from the NHL.
Should the council approve the 15-year, $225 million deal for Jobing.com Arena, the path will be cleared for the Coyotes to stay.
A vote against the lease agreement means the Coyotes almost certainly are headed out of town for good.
