Contador keeps lead as fellow Spaniard wins stage

CHALMAZEL-JEANSAGNIERE, France – Jesus Herrada of Spain won the second stage of the Criterium du Dauphine Libere on Tuesday after making the most of a slightly uphill finish to time his attack to perfection.

Two-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador kept the race leader’s jersey.

After the peloton caught the breakaway riders, Herrada made his move in the last 200 meters of the 168-kilometer stage in central France, surging ahead to cross the finish line 2 seconds ahead of Frenchman Tony Gallopin.

Tiger scratched for yet another major tournament

Tiger Woods said Tuesday he will not play at the U.S. Open this year as he recovers from back surgery.

This will be the third time in the last six years injuries have kept him out of the U.S. Open, which he’s won three times.

Woods said on his website that he is working hard to get ready but that he is not physically ready to play next week at Oakmont, or at his Quicken Loans National tournament the following week at Congressional.

He has not played since a tie for 10th in the Wyndham Championship in August. Woods, who first had back surgery a week before the 2014 Masters, had two more surgeries in September and October.

Former No. 1 survives a playoff for U.S. Open spot

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Luke Donald went two extra holes to join four other players earning a spot in the U.S. Open after a playoff Tuesday morning.

Donald, a former world No. 1 who has been eligible for every U.S. Open since 2005, made two pars in the six-man playoff in the Ohio qualifier that featured the strongest field. The others advancing were Patrick Rodgers, Jason Allred, Richard Schembechler II and Texas Longhorns sophomore Scottie Scheffler.

Daniel Summerhays was eliminated when he missed a 5-foot putt on the second playoff hole. He was the first alternate.

Vijay Singh didn’t come close to qualifying in Florida, which didn’t finish until Tuesday because of rain. He missed out by nine shots. Aron Price of Australia and Tim Wilkinson led the way, while Sam Horsfield and Matthew Borchert ended a five-man playoff for the last two spots with birdies on the first extra hole.

League proves as open to Twitter hack as players

NEW YORK – The NFL is looking into how its Twitter account came to be hacked with a post purporting that Commissioner Roger Goodell had died.

Around midday Tuesday, a post went up on the league’s official account that read: “We regret to inform our fans that our commissioner, Roger Goodell, has passed away. He was 57,” followed by a hashtag and “RIP.”

That tweet was soon deleted, as were follow-up tweets that said: “Oi, I said Roger Goodell has died. Don’t delete that tweet,” and, as other Twitter users surmised it was a hack, “OK, OK, you amateur detective win. Good job.”

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirms the account was hacked and says the league is looking into what happened.
