Seminoles bench Winston: ‘I have to tone it down’

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Jameis Winston will be a spectator in the first half of Florida State’s showdown against Clemson on Saturday after making “offensive and vulgar” comments about women – the latest embarrassment in a growing list of poor decisions off the field.

Florida State interim President Dr. Garnett S. Stokes and athletic director Stan Wilcox announced in a joint statement Wednesday the quarterback also will undergo internal discipline, but they did not provide details of the punishment.

Several students tweeted Winston stood on campus Tuesday and shouted a lascivious comment about female anatomy that may have derived from an internet meme.

The 20-year-old Winston addressed his inappropriate comments before Wednesday’s practice, saying: “I have to tone it down.”

The Heisman Trophy winner has made similar comments after previous incidents, and Florida State seems to be growing less tolerant of his discretions.

Williams packs his bags as Adam Scott’s caddie

Adam Scott is looking for a caddie now that he and Steve Williams have decided to end their partnership.

Williams has been on the bag for 14 majors – 13 with Tiger Woods. He began working with Scott in the summer of 2012.

Williams lives in New Zealand and has said he wants to cut back on his schedule. He said it became clear his plan was not going to fit with what Scott wanted.

Marlins’ MVP candidate out for the rest of the season

NEW YORK – Injured Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton won’t play again in the majors this season because of last week’s beaning.

Stanton was hit in the face by a fastball from Milwaukee’s Mike Fiers last Thursday. Stanton suffered two black eyes, cuts, dental damages and facial fractures that required stitches. Marlins’ president of baseball operations Mike Hill said Stanton also had concussion symptoms but has been given neurological clearance.

The 24-year-old is a top candidate for the NL MVP award. His 37 home runs still are the most in the NL, and he was leading the majors with 105 runs batted in when he was hurt.

Cardinals, Panthers, Vikings deactivate their arrested

PHOENIX – Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer was arrested Wednesday on aggravated assault charges in connection with two altercations at his home in July involving a woman and their 18-month-old child, the latest in a string of such cases involving NFL players.

The Cardinals said they became aware of the situation Wednesday and are cooperating with the investigation. The NFL said the case will be reviewed under the league’s personal-conduct policy.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Panthers removed Greg Hardy from the team’s active roster until the Pro Bowl defensive end’s domestic violence case is resolved.

Hardy will continue to be paid and is allowed to be at the team facility but will not practice.

MINNEAPOLIS – Hours after reversing course and benching Adrian Peterson indefinitely, Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said Wednesday that the team “made a mistake” in bringing back its superstar after his indictment on a felony child-abuse charge in Texas.

Wilf and his co-owner brother, Mark Wilf, announced their decision around midnight after concluding it was best for the Vikings and for Peterson, their All-Pro running back who has played his entire NFL career with Minnesota and is accused of injuring his 4-year-old son by spanking him with a wooden switch.

The organization put Peterson on the exempt-commissioner’s permission list, meaning he is off the active roster while he deals with his legal affairs.
