Wiggins powers Sky squad to time trial win at Giro

ISCHIA, Italy – Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins powered Sky to victory in the team time trial in the second stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday and moved into second place overall, while Italian teammate Salvatore Puccio took the leader’s pink jersey.

Sky finished in 22 minutes, 5 seconds along the picturesque 10.8-mile route on the island of Ischia. Movistar was second, 9 seconds behind, and Astana – with Wiggins’ expected rival for the title, Vincenzo Nibali of Italy – was third, 14 seconds back.

Italy’s Dario Cataldo was the first Sky rider to cross the line, but Puccio took the pink jersey because of his better placement in Saturday’s opening stage.

“It’s a bit unexpected, but I’m happy to have it,” Puccio said.

The Omega Pharma-Quick Step team featuring stage 1 winner Mark Cavendish finished 17th, 48 seconds behind Sky.

Omega sorely missed time trial specialist Tony Martin, who is not riding the Giro.

Surprise: Ernst’s late birdie leads to playoff victory

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A week like no other at Quail Hollow held one final surprise Sunday when 22-year-old rookie Derek Ernst birdied the 18th hole to force a playoff, and then won the Wells Fargo Championship on the first extra hole against David Lynn of England.

Ernst was playing only his ninth PGA Tour event. He was the fourth alternate at the start of the week. He was No. 1,207 in the world ranking. None of that mattered when he choked up on a 6-iron from 192 yards and drilled his shot into 4 feet. He made one of only four birdies on the 18th in the final round, and this was the most important. It gave him a 2-under 70 and put him in a playoff with Lynn, who also shot 70.

Kerr’s playoff par pushes her past Pettersen at Kingsmill

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Cristie Kerr made a short par putt on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with Suzann Pettersen to win the Kingsmill Championship for the third time.

The victory was the 16th of Kerr’s career and her third in five career playoffs. She also won at the River Course in 2005 and 2009.

Kerr shot a 2-under 69, and Pettersen had a 67 to finish at 12-under 272 on the River Course.

Hinchcliffe wins second career IndyCar race

SÃO PAULO – James Hinchcliffe overtook Takuma Sato of Japan on the last turn to win IndyCar’s Sao Paulo 300 for his second career victory on Sunday.

The Canadian moved from third to second with three laps to go and, after the long back straight, moved inside Sato to take the lead just a few yards from the finish line at the Anhembi street track.

American Marco Andretti was third.

Sato, coming off his first career victory two weeks ago in Long Beach, drove in too hard for the final turn and gave space for Hinchcliffe to get past.

Sato had successfully defended the lead from Hinchcliffe on two other occasions in the final laps but couldn’t hang on at the end.

Sato leaves Brazil with the lead in the drivers’ standings.
