Miller, No. 1 Ohio State get revenge in opener

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Braxton Miller scored two touchdowns, including an electrifying 53-yard run, and No. 1 Ohio State pulled away from Virginia Tech for a season-opening 42-24 victory on Monday night.

Cardale Jones, whose status as the starter was not known until he came out for the first offensive series, threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score, as Ohio State avenged a 35-21 home loss to Virginia Tech last season and earned its 14th win in a row overall.

The Hokies, meanwhile, lost more than the game, with quarterback Michael Brewer shelved by a left shoulder injury in the third quarter.

Clemson WR Williams out with neck fracture

Clemson receiver Mike Williams has a fracture in his neck that Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said might keep him out all season.

Swinney said Sunday that an MRI showed a small fracture after the junior slammed into the padded goalpost support. Swinney did not have a timetable for when Williams might return, although he thought the wideout would have to have the injury checked in six weeks.

Williams had 1,030 yards and six touchdowns last season and figured to lead a talented, yet young, group of receivers. Williams was hurt on a 4-yard touchdown catch that opened the No. 12 Clemson’s scoring in a 49-10 victory over Wofford on Saturday.

Star Arizona linebacker will miss some time

Arizona All-American linebacker Scooby Wright will miss up to a month after undergoing surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee.

Wright was injured in the first quarter of the 22nd-ranked Wildcats’ 42-32 win over UTSA on Thursday and tried to come back, but lasted one play before heading back to the bench. The junior spent the second half in street clothes while walking with a cane.

Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez said Monday that Wright had arthroscopic surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear on Saturday and will miss three to four weeks.

Rodriguez take lead of Vuelta, Schleck wins stage

ERMITA DE ALBA, Spain – Joaquim Rodriguez took over the lead of the Spanish Vuelta after a grueling 16th stage won by Frank Schleck of Luxembourg in the northern mountains on Monday.

Schleck shed fellow escapee Rodolfo Torres on the final of seven climbs before finishing atop the special-category peak at Ermita de Alba in 5 hours, 49 minutes, 56 seconds.

Rodriguez also attacked on the last uphill push of the 114.9-mile stage to turn a one-second deficit into a one-second lead over Italian Fabio Aru, who ceded him the red leader’s jersey.

Tom Dumoulin, the Dutch time-trial specialist, stuck with the climbers and could shoot for the red leader’s jersey in the only individual time trial of the three-week race on Wednesday. Tuesday is a rest day.

Injured Pierre-Paul arrives at Giants headquarters

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Two months after injuring his right hand in a July 4 fireworks accident, two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul reported to the New York Giants.

Head coach Tom Coughlin refused to say much about Pierre-Paul after practice because he had no knowledge that the player had arrived at the team’s headquarters. Teammates were expecting him.

Despite missing all of training camp, Coughlin would not rule out Pierre-Paul for the season opener in Dallas on Sunday night – provided the doctors clear him to play and he is fit.
