Stadler, a Broncos fan, wins the Phoenix Open in orange

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Kevin Stadler won the Phoenix Open on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title when playing partner Bubba Watson missed a 5-footer for par on the final hole.

Stadler, the 33-year-old son of PGA Tour winner Craig Stadler, closed with a 3-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over Watson and Canadian Graham DeLaet.

Stadler won in his 239th PGA Tour start, earning a spot in the Masters – a tournament his father won in 1982. The Stadlers are the ninth father-son winners in tour history.

Stadler finished at 16-under 268 at TPC Scottsdale, his home course. Raised in Colorado, he played in Denver Broncos colors, wearing an orange shirt and blue pants and hat.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Stephen Gallacher of Scotland shot a final round 72 on Sunday to become the first player to successfully defend the Dubai Desert Classic title, beating Emiliano Grillo of Argentina by one stroke.

Gallacher fought back after four bogeys over his opening eight left him in a five-way tie for the lead after 11 holes. He won the 25-year-old tournament with an overall 16-under 272 for only his third victory in 18 years and 431 events on the European Tour.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – Mi Hyang Lee of South Korea shot a course-record 9-under 63 on Sunday to win the Women’s New Zealand Golf Open by a stroke from defending champion Lydia Ko.

Lee, whose best finish in 2013 was a tie for 19th at the Evian Championship, had an eagle and seven birdies in a final round that saw her leap 20 places into the lead with a total of 9-under 207.

Murray beats Querrey to seal the Brits’ Davis Cup victory

SAN DIEGO – Wimbledon champion Andy Murray beat Sam Querrey 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3 to clinch Britain’s opening-round Davis Cup victory against the United States on Sunday at Petco Park.

Murray won his 18th consecutive Davis Cup singles match, and Britain beat the Americans for the first time since 1935. Britain advanced to the World Group quarterfinals for the first time since 1986. It will face Italy, which defeated Argentina.

Pavlyuchenkova wins in Paris; Makarova wins in Thailand

PARIS – Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia beat third-seeded Sara Errani of Italy 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday in the final of the Open GDF Suez for her sixth career title.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Fourth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia won her first tournament in almost four years after she beat Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-6 (7) in the final of the Pattaya Open on Sunday.

Ligety wins a St. Moritz GS by a wide margin

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland – Ted Ligety of the United States put together two nearly flawless runs in difficult conditions to win a World Cup giant slalom Sunday, the last men’s race before the Sochi Olympics.

Ligety, a two-time world champion in the event, overcame poor visibility to finish a massive 1.51 seconds faster than Marcel Hirscher of Austria in the combined time. Alexis Pinturault of France finished third, 1.69 seconds behind Ligety.

Hansdotter wins a slalom ahead of the Schild sisters

KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia – Frida Hansdotter’s wait for her first World Cup victory after eight second places finally ended Sunday, in good time for the Sochi Olympics.

The 28-year-old Hansdotter won on a soft course in heavy snow after Colorado teen Mikaela Shiffrin failed to hold on to her opening-run lead and slipped to seventh. Hansdotter’s winning time was 1 minute, 50.17 seconds.

Austrian sisters Marlies and Bernadette Schild were second and third, coming 0.05 and 0.15 behind respectively.
