A surprise winner at men’s time trial at worlds
RICHMOND, Va. – Vasil Kiryienka of Belarus topped a surprising podium in the men’s time trial at the world championships Wednesday, while three-time world champion Tony Martin and heavy favorite Rohan Dennis missed out on medals entirely.
Kiryienka covered the 53-kilometer course from the Kings Dominion amusement park to downtown Richmond in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 29 seconds. Adriano Malori of Italy was 9 seconds back to take silver and Jerome Coppel of France another 17 seconds back to earn bronze.
Taylor Phinney was the top American finisher in 12th.
Arbitrator forces change to the U.S. worlds team
RICHMOND, Va. – Lauren Komanski replaced Allie Dragoo on the U.S. team for the road cycling world championship after an arbitrator’s ruling late Tuesday, less than four days before the start of the race.
The arbitrator did not disclose the reasoning behind the ruling because of time constraints, but USA Cycling said in a statement late Tuesday that a full opinion would be released in 30 days.
The deadline for rosters to be submitted was Wednesday.
Komanski, who happens to be Dragoo’s teammate on the trade team Twenty16-Sho-Air, petitioned USA Cycling’s selection committee after the world championship team was announced earlier this month.

Colorado State’s mascot died of natural causes
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State University officials said their sheep mascot who died the day of a major rivalry game did so of natural causes.
The Coloradoan reported CAM the Ram had been sick for a week before dying Saturday. A substitute had to be sent in for CAM at the Rocky Mountain Showdown with the CU Buffaloes.
Associate professor of animal sciences Kraig Peel says CAM’s breed, Rambouillet sheep, usually live to be 6 to 8 years old.
CAM was the 24th Rambouillet to serve as mascot. He served for four years and was 6 years old.
CAM 24 was replaced by CAM 25, who officials say has the right temperament and personality to be mascot. CAM 25 is CAM 24’s half-brother.

Texas football coach says he ordered hit on ref
SAN ANTONIO – A high school principal in Texas said the school’s assistant football coach acknowledged directing two players to a hit a referee during a game earlier this month.
In an internal school district statement first reported by ESPN, John Jay High School Principal Robert Harris said assistant coach Mack Breed told him he asked the students to hit the referee because the ref had used racial slurs and missed calls.
The referee, Robert Watts, has denied using any slurs.
The two suspended students, Michael Moreno and Victor Rojas, appeared at a disciplinary hearing Wednesday. Northside school district on the students’ possible punishment.
Breed remains suspended from the district. He did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Registration closes for the 2016 Boston Marathon
BOSTON – The mad dash to get into next year’s Boston Marathon is over.
Organizers say registration for the April 18 race closed at 3 p.m. Wednesday after the field limit of 30,000 entrants was reached.
Registration had opened Sept. 14, with the fastest runners getting first dibs on a bib.
