64-year-old Nyad completes trek from Cuba to Florida

KEY WEST, Fla. – Looking dazed and sunburned, U.S. endurance swimmer Diana Nyad walked ashore Monday, becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without the help of a shark cage.

The 64-year-old Nyad swam up to the beach just before 2 p.m. EDT, about 53 hours after starting her journey from Havana on Saturday. As she approached, spectators waded into waist-high water and surrounded her, taking pictures and cheering her on.

Her team said she had been slurring her words while out in the water. She was placed on a stretcher on the beach and received an IV before she was taken by ambulance to a hospital. But her doctor later declared her essentially healthy and expected her to recover quickly from dehydration, swelling and sunburn.

No concerns here: RGIII to start Monday vs. Eagles

ASHBURN, Va. – So much for those last-minute “concerns.” RG3 is starting Week 1.

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan finally confirmed Monday what has appeared inevitable since the start of training camp: Robert Griffin III will be under center for the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

As is fitting with all things Griffin these days, Shanahan couldn’t make the proclamation without leaving a few loose ends of intrigue. The coach refused to disclose the “concerns” that caused him to delay the announcement for several days after the quarterback was medically cleared by Dr. James Andrews.

Stenson’s great summer pays off at Deutsche Bank

NORTON, Mass. – A great summer of golf finally paid off for Henrik Stenson when he won the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Stenson raced by a fast-fading Sergio Garcia on Monday, and he holed a bunker shot on the 17th hole to turn back a final threat from Steve Stricker. The Swede, who had close calls in two majors, closed with a 5-under 66 and tied the tournament record at the TPC Boston. He won by two shots over Stricker.

Labor Day at the TPC Boston was loaded with drama.

Brendan Steele birdied his last four holes to advance to the third playoff event in Chicago. Ernie Els made it by a fraction of a point. And Zach Johnson made a 25-foot birdie putt on his last hole to make the Presidents Cup team.

ALTO HAZALLANAS, Spain – Christopher Horner of the United States won the 10th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Monday to take the overall lead for a second time.

The 41-year-old RadioShack-Leopard rider also won the third stage. Organizers said he became the oldest rider to earn a stage victory in one of cycling’s three grand tours.

Horner broke away on the steep, zigzagging ascent to the Alto Hazallanas peak at the end of 116-mile mountainous ride from southern Andalucia. He won in 4 hours, 30 minutes, 22 seconds.
