Kent State coach vows female kicker will play

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Kent State’s April Goss is a rarity – a woman on a Division I college football roster. By the end of this season, she could accomplish something even rarer if she gets the chance to play in a game.

“Before this year’s out, she’ll get out there. I promise you that,” Kent State coach Paul Haynes said Saturday after his team’s 52-3 loss at Illinois.

This is Goss’ fourth season on the Golden Flash roster.

There have been a handful of women on Division I rosters, among them Katie Hnida, who kicked a pair of extra points for New Mexico in 2003.

Dumoulin rides time trial to overall lead

BURGOS, Spain – Tom Dumoulin of Netherlands won the individual time-trial in the Spanish Vuelta on Wednesday to reclaim the race leader’s red jersey on the 17th stage.

The tall, 24-year-old Giant-Alpecin rider clocked 46 minutes, one second, over the 24-mile course in and around the northern city of Burgos. He beat Maciej Bodnar of Poland by 1 minute, 4 seconds, while Spain’s Alejandro Valverde was third fastest, trailing by 1:08.

The overall standings are very close, as Fabio Aru lags is three seconds behind Dumoulin, while overnight leader Joaquin Rodriguez is now third overall and 1:15 off the pace.

Scene of Dufner’s big win will return in 2023

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The PGA Championship will return to Oak Hill in 2023 for the fourth time.

Jason Dufner won the PGA Championship when it was held two years ago at Oak Hill. Shaun Micheel won the previous time in 2003 when he hit 7-iron within inches on the final hole to secure what turned out to be the only win of his career.

It will be the fourth time Oak Hills has held the PGA Championship, tied for the most with Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Park eyeing career Slam at the Evian Championship

PARIS – Serena Williams isn’t the only woman in sight of a Grand Slam this weekend.

Inbee Park can achieve a career Grand Slam in golf by winning the Evian Championship starting Thursday near the French Alps.

Park won the Evian on the edge of Lake Geneva in 2012, but it came a year before the U.S. LPGA Tour made it the fifth and final major on its calendar.

To mark the occasion, the tour has gone into hyperbole. When Park won the Women’s British Open last month, becoming the seventh woman to win four different majors, the tour called that the “career Grand Slam.” Adding the Evian will give her a “Super Career Grand Slam.”

Controversial hit on referee draws an investigation

ROUND ROCK, Texas – High school sports officials in Texas are questioning whether the coaches of two players accused of intentionally hitting a referee should have done more to calm emotions in what had been a tense game.

Executive board members of the University Interscholastic League held a public hearing Wednesday on the incident from last Friday when two San Antonio Jay High School players blindsided the game umpire. The incident has drawn national attention.

Board members called it an embarrassment for the state that will not be tolerated. Committee members directed local school officials to investigate whether Jay High School has a culture of unsportsmanlike conduct.

Board member Gil Garza, athletic director for Dallas schools, said the game was filled with penalties and ejections and was a “time bomb” waiting to go off.
