Irish make Kelly their man through 2021 season

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Brian Kelly agreed to a six-year contract to stay on as coach at Notre Dame through 2021.

The deal announced Friday by athletic director Jack Swarbrick would make the 54-year-old Kelly, who has been at the school six seasons, the second-longest serving Irish coach in history.

Kelly is 55-23 at Notre Dame, a winning percentage of .705.

Ole Miss aware of NCAA Notice of Allegations

Mississippi has been notified by the NCAA of rules violations involving the football, women’s basketball and track and field programs.

The announcement was not unexpected but comes at a bad time for the Ole Miss football program, which is trying to lock down one of the most highly regarded recruiting classes.

The NCAA has been investigating Ole Miss since 2012.

Big names on the course all across planet

SAN DIEGO – Phil Mickelson was expecting to post a low score on the North Course at Torrey Pines and go into the weekend with a chance to win the Farmers Insurance Open. By closing with three straight bogeys, he’s going home after missing the cut.

Mickelson at least was in good company. Defending champion Jason Day, No. 2 in the world, also missed the cut. And it looked as though Rickie Fowler would join them.

Gary Woodland powered his way to a 5-under 67 on the South Course and had a share of the lead with K.J. Choi, who shot 67 on the North. Choi has not won in five years on the PGA Tour.

DOHA, Qatar – Paul Lawrie earned a two-shot lead at a windy Doha Golf Club on Friday to close in on an third Qatar Masters title.

The overnight leader started the third round with 13 consecutive pars before making his first birdie on the 14th hole, then picked up another shot on the par-5 18th to finish at 2-under-par 70.

SINGAPORE – Jordan Spieth slipped five shots off the lead at the Singapore Open on Friday when an electrical storm forced second-round play to be abandoned.

Spieth was lurking just one shot off the pace after his opening round at Sentosa Country Club, but suddenly found himself five strokes behind and tied for sixth place after Song Young-han of South Korea capitalized on his early start to beat the arrival of the foul weather and post an 8-under 63 to go to the clubhouse leading at 9 under.

Call them the San Diego Chargers, for now

SAN DIEGO – Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos says the team will play in San Diego in 2016 and he’ll work with politicians and the business community to try to resolve a long, bitter battle over a new stadium.

Spanos’ statement was posted on the team’s web site shortly after a report said the Chargers had reached a deal to join the Los Angeles Rams in a stadium expected to open in Inglewood in 2019.

Says Spanos: “I am committed to looking at this with a fresh perspective and new sense of possibility.”
