Steele gets his season off to ideal start at Silverado
NAPA, Calif. – Brendan Steele began the new PGA Tour season by making five birdies in a row on his way to a 9-under 63 and the early lead in the Frys.com Open.
Rory McIlroy is in between two seasons and opened with a 68.
In ideal conditions Thursday at Silverado, Steele had no stress. The only green he missed was on the par-3 seventh, where he got up-and-down for birdie. He finished the back nine with five consecutive birdies for a 29 and cooled only slightly on the front nine.

Statue of Magic Johnson vandalized ahead of game
EAST LANSING, Mich. – A statue of Earvin “Magic” Johnson on the campus of Michigan State University was vandalized with yellow paint ahead of the Spartans’ football game against rival Michigan.
The statue of the former NBA and Michigan State basketball star is outside the Breslin Center in East Lansing. It had an “M” and the words “BEAT STATE” painted on it. Michigan’s colors are maize and blue.
No. 12 Michigan will host No. 7 Michigan State . Supporters have been on guard duty to prevent possible vandalism to campus landmarks. In Ann Arbor, Michigan students are guarding the block “M” on the Diag.

Seahawks’ Coleman arrested in hit-and-run investigation
BELLEVUE, Wash. – Seattle Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman was suspended indefinitely by the team Thursday after his arrest in a hit-and-run investigation.
Coleman was booked into King County Jail in Seattle early Thursday and bail was denied until his first court appearance. He was arrested by
Coleman’s agents said in a statement “it seems Derrick may have fallen asleep while driving home from a Seahawks’ facility.”
The King County prosecutor’s office said that because Coleman was not booked until after midnight his initial court appearance will be Friday at the earliest. He is being investigated for vehicular assault and felony hit and run.
Coleman is legally deaf and his football success has made him an inspirational figure. He has been featured in TV commercials and written a book that was released this year.
Gunshot victim at Cowboys’ stadium dies of injuries
ARLINGTON, Texas – A 43-year-old Texas man who was shot outside the Dallas Cowboys stadium over the weekend has died.
Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office records show Richard Sells died Thursday night at a Fort Worth hospital.
Authorities said he was shot Sunday during a fight at a parking lot tailgate party after the Cowboys lost to the New England Patriots.
Arlington police said 28-year-old Marvin Rodriguez pointed a gun at a man during a fight then shot Sells in the neck as Sells tried to break up another altercation.

Pistorius to be released from jail on Oct. 20
JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s Department of Corrections has decided Oscar Pistorius can be released from prison and moved to house arrest Tuesday.
The parole board made the decision Thursday after an initial decision to release the double-amputee runner in August was canceled.
The Olympic runner served nearly a year of his five-year sentence for manslaughter for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
He will be moved to correctional supervision, a form of house arrest where he will have to live under certain conditions.
Under South African law, an offender sentenced to five years or less in jail can be released after serving one-sixth – in Pistorius’ case 10 months.
