Rutgers coach suspended for contact over academics
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers suspended football coach Kyle Flood for three games after he contacted a faculty member over a player’s status.
Rutgers President Robert Barchi announced the punishment Wednesday, a day after he said he received an internal investigative report.
Flood was also fined $50,000.
The report found that Flood emailed and met in person with a faculty member even though he knew or should have known of the university’s policies prohibiting coach-initiated contact with faculty members regarding students’ academic standing.
The report also found that Flood provided grammatical and minor editorial suggestions for a player’s paper to complete a course.

Brits aims for podium at road world championships
From Bradley Wiggins celebrating his groundbreaking Tour de France triumph on the Champs-Elysses, to Britain’s record-setting medal haul at the London Olympics, the rest of the world has been trying to play catch-up to British Cycling the past few years.
Now, with the road world championships beginning this weekend in Richmond, Virginia, Britain once again has aspirations of landing several riders on the top step of a podium.
The team announced last week is highlighted on the men’s side by former world champion Mark Cavendish and the versatile Geraint Thomas, and the women’s side by Lizzie Armitstead, who last month was crowned the overall World Cup champion after a dominant season.

Third leg of playoffs set to begin Thursday in Illinois
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The best remaining players on the PGA Tour are north of Chicago for the third consecutive tournament that features an $8.25 million purse and a chance to claim the $10 million bonus for winning the FedEx Cup.
Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Boston winner Rickie Fowler are virtually certain to be in the top five in the FedEx Cup going to Atlanta, meaning they only have to win the Tour Championship to claim the $10 million prize.
Henrik Stenson is at No. 4 after runner-up finishes in the opening two playoff events. Hunter Mahan is at No. 52 and is trying to keep alive his streak of never missing a playoff event since the FedEx Cup began in 2007. Harris English is No. 32. He missed the Tour Championship by one spot in 2013 and by two spots a year ago.

Worry no more: Ronaldo still has his scoring touch
MADRID – After an unusually barren start to his season, Cristiano Ronaldo came alive in the last two games, scoring eight goals.
He netted five against Espanyol in the Spanish league on Saturday and three more in a 4-0 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday.
It was enough to make him Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer in the Liga, and move him ahead of Lionel Messi as the top scorer in the European tournament.
