Heavy-hearted Simpson in 3-way tie after three in Hawaii
KAPALUA, Hawaii – Webb Simpson wanted to give his caddie something good to see on television. He delivered a 5-under 68 that gave Simpson a three-way tie for the lead with Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth going into the final round of the Tournament of Champions.
Simpson said he played with a heavy heart Sunday upon learning the newborn son of his caddie, Paul Tesori, was in intensive care. He says players and caddies are sending along their best to Tesori, and that Simpson rarely went a hole without thinking about him. But he played some good golf on a beautiful day, getting into the mix of a wild tournament.
Johnson and Spieth each had a 69 to join Simpson at 14-under 205.
Zach Johnson stumbled to a 74 and was two back.

Shiffrin soars to second World Cup slalom victory
BORMIO, Italy – American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin fought through snow and rain to win her second World Cup slalom of the season Sunday, showing her ability to deal with all types of conditions a month before the Sochi Olympics.
The 18-year-old Shiffrin led after the opening run and clocked a two-leg combined time of 2 minutes, 0.41 seconds down the Stelvio course.
Maria Pietilae-Holmner of Sweden finished second, 0.13 seconds behind, and Nastasia Noens of France moved up from 13th after the first run to finish third, 0.62 back.
Shiffrin was only 0.01 ahead of Pietilae-Holmner at the final checkpoint but she excelled on the steep finishing gates to gain back some time.
The race was moved from Zagreb due to a lack of snow in Croatia.

Finland outlasts Sweden to claim world junior crown
MALMO, Sweden – Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen scored at 9:42 of overtime to give Finland its third world junior hockey title, 3-2 over Sweden on Sunday.
Ristolainen picked up the puck along the right boards, beat defenseman Robert Hagg as he cut in front of the goal and slid a backhander under goalie Oscar Dansk’s right leg pad.
Finland also won the under-20 championship in 1987 in Czechoslovakia and 1998 at home in Helsinki.
Sweden tied it at 2 on Christian Djoos’ power-play goal with 9:07 left in the third period. The Washington draft pick beat goalie Juuse Saros with a slap shot through traffic from the high slot.
Finland’s Era Lindell – drafted by Dallas – scored 28 seconds into the game, and Lucas Wallmark tied it on a power play at 7:53 of the second. Finland regained the lead 45 seconds later on Nashville draft pick Saku Maenalanen’s goal.
Saros, also drafted by Nashville, made 35 saves.

Hewitt knocks off Federer to win first title since 2010
BRISBANE, Australia – Lleyton Hewitt won a title for the first time since 2010 with an upset 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win at the Brisbane International over Roger Federer, his longest-standing rival on tour.
The 32-year-old former No. 1s have met 27 times dating back to 1999, and after Sunday’s unexpected victory Hewitt improved his record to nine wins against the 17-time Grand Slam champion.
Top-seeded Federer was broken three times and committed 22 unforced errors in the first set, making some uncharacteristically basic mistakes including an air swing and two shanked forehands.
He recovered in the second set and had breakpoint chances in No. 61-ranked Hewitt’s first three service games in the deciding set, but couldn’t get the vital breakthrough when he needed it most.
