Orediggers buried by Bellarmine in Elite Eight

Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champion Colorado School of Mines saw its season end Wednesday.

After winning the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball South Central Regional tournament in Golden last week, the Orediggers earned a trip to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for the Elite Eight.

But fifth-seeded Colorado Mines couldn’t hang with No. 2 Bellarmine in the first half and lost 92-72 to finish the season with a 30-5 overall record.

Luke Schroepfer led Mines with 18 points. Gokul Natesan added 14 points and seven assists but turned it over five times to go with three steals. Those were the only two Orediggers to score in double figures.

The Knights from Louisville, Kentucky, received 26 points, six assists and six rebounds from Adam Eberhard. Jarek Coles and Ben Weyer both came off the bench to score 11 points, and Weyer had seven rebounds. Bellarmine shot 65.2 percent in the first half and 58.9 percent for the game. Colorado Mines shot only 25 percent in the second half and 37.1 percent for the game.

Colorado Mines swept Fort Lewis College this season with overtime wins to win the conference and a win in the second round of the regional tournament to end the Skyhawks’ season.

Mickelson says he won’t be called as witness in trial

AUSTIN, Texas – While his name has been mentioned as a pivotal figure in a federal insider trading criminal trial, Phil Mickelson shrugged off any hint that will be hanging over him this week or in the run up to The Masters next month – both with his play and his comments.

But prosecutors and defense attorneys for gambler William “Billy” Walters have said Mickelson would be a key figure in the trial in New York, and the judge hinted to jurors last week the five-time major champion could be called to testify.

Mickelson said that won’t happen.

‘Pacman’ Jones faces 3 misdemeanor charges

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones faces three misdemeanor charges, including assault, but no longer is being charged with a felony for a January confrontation with hotel security guards, police and a nurse.

A felony charge of harassment with a bodily substance, for allegedly spitting at a nurse, was dismissed at the prosecuting attorney’s request, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said in a statement Wednesday. The felony charge carries a potential sentence of six to 12 months in jail upon conviction.

Deters said the misdemeanors also include disorderly conduct and obstructing official business. Those charges will be referred to Hamilton County Municipal Court in Cincinnati for prosecution by a city prosecutor, according to Deters.

USA postpones women’s training camp amid dispute

USA Hockey postponed the start of the women’s national team’s world championship training camp amid an ongoing wage dispute.

USA Hockey said the camp originally scheduled to begin Wednesday in Traverse City, Michigan, won’t happen.

The organization “anticipates” a training camp in Plymouth, Michigan, site of the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship.

Players announced last week that they’d boycott the tournament unless they made significant progress with USA Hockey in negotiations on a labor deal. The sides met for 10-plus hours Monday, and John Langel, a lawyer for the players, said that the next meeting will be by phone but hasn’t been scheduled yet.
