Jim Boeheim numbers his remaining years at ’Cuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse university officials said coach Jim Boeheim will retire in three years and athletic director Daryl Gross resigned following punishment from the NCAA for violations that lasted more than a decade.

Chancellor Kent Syverud said Wednesday that Boeheim, a Hall of Famer and head coach for 39 years, decided to make the announcement to “bring certainty to the team and program in the coming years” and to allow for a smooth transition.

Gross will take another marketing position with the school and Pete Salas will serve as interim athletic director.

Lance Armstrong meets with USADA trying to shorten ban

AUSTIN, Texas – A person with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press that cyclist Lance Armstrong talked last week with the head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency in hopes of potentially reducing his lifetime ban.

Armstrong and Travis Tygart met for six hours, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussion was meant to remain private. The meeting first was reported by The New York Times.

The meeting was their first since late 2012. Tygart has said that despite Armstrong’s public confessions to performance-enhancing drugs use, he had to meet with USADA to have any chance of reducing his ban, which covers sanctioned triathlons, marathons and other sports Armstrong enjoys.

Seavey cements Iditarod dynasty with his 3rd title

NOME, Alaska – Dallas Seavey won his third Iditarod in the last four years, beating his father to the finish line in Nome early Wednesday after racing 1,000 miles across Alaska.

Dallas Seavey came in under the city’s famous burled arch finish line to wild applause from fans lining the street. An exhausted Seavey petted and hugged his dogs, later saying, “It takes a whole team to get us here.”

He also won titles in 2012 and 2014. His father, Mitch Seavey, won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 2013 and 2004.

NFL

Extensive replay expansion could be on the horizon

NEW YORK – Significant changes to the use of video replay, including reviewing all fouls called by game officials, will be proposed by the NFL’s competition committee at next week’s owners meetings.

The committee is presenting a proposal by the Detroit Lions that would permit the instant replay system to correct an officiating error. That would include such judgment calls as pass interference.

Also to be discussed in Phoenix will be a proposal by the New England Patriots to place fixed cameras on all boundary lines. That would guarantee coverage of those lines regardless of where network cameras are positioned.

NHL

Talk of faceoffs wraps up general manager meetings

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The NHL general managers wrapped up three days of meetings Wednesday with talk of making changes to the faceoff.

The faceoff proposal has the defenseman putting his stick down first. The change includes the neutral zone, except for the center ice dot where the visiting team will continue to put their stick down first.

The GMs agreed Tuesday to recommend some type of three-on-three beginning next season. But they are still debating whether to add time to the extra session or begin overtime three-on-three instead of four-on-four.
