Oregon State fires Obama’s brother-in-law after six years

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State fired Craig Robinson after six seasons without making the NCAA Tournament.

The brother-in-law of President Barack Obama, Robinson had a solid start in Corvallis, taking a program that had lost 21 consecutive Pac-12 games to an 18-win season in 2008-09.

The Beavers’ results under Robinson were uneven after that, finishing no better than fifth in the Pac-12 in his six seasons.

Oregon State won 21 games in 2011-12, but went 7-11 in conference to miss the NCAA tournament.

After going 14-18 in 2012-13, the Beavers were 16-16 this season, including 8-10 in the Pac-12, and lost to Radford at home in the CBI.

Robinson went 94-105 with Oregon State after spending two seasons as Brown’s head coach.

One of the league’s worst teams has the best rookie

PHILADELPHIA – 76ers guard Michael Carter-Williams won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year Award.

Carter-Williams was only the third player since 1950-51 to lead all rookies in scoring (16.7), rebounding (6.3) and assists (6.2), joining Oscar Robertson (1960-61) and Alvan Adams (1975-76).

The league said Monday that he received 104 of a possible 124 first-place votes. The Orlando Magic’s Victor Oladipo finished second, and Trey Burke of the Utah Jazz was third.

Casey isn’t going extinct in Toronto after an extension

A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey has agreed to a new three-year contract.

The agreement was reached on Monday, one day after the Raptors lost Game 7 to the Brooklyn Nets in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The person requested anonymity because the team has not announced the deal.

Casey led the Raptors to a surprising 48-34 record and the Atlantic Division title in his third season with the team. His job status was tenuous when the season began after general manager Masai Ujiri was hired away from Denver.

Broncos sign seldom-used free-agent DT Marvin Austin

ENGLEWOOD – The Denver Broncos have signed fourth-year defensive tackle Marvin Austin, whose career has been beset by injuries since the New York Giants made him a second-round draft pick in 2011.

After starring at North Carolina, Austin missed his rookie season with a torn chest muscle before playing in eight games in New York in 2012.

He played in a total of three games last season for Miami and Dallas. The Cowboys released him after just one game and one tackle when he hurt his back in practice in November.

Hurricanes fire Kirk Muller amid 5-year playoff drought

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes fired coach Kirk Muller, the team announced Monday.

New general manager Ron Francis wasted little time making his first big move, dismissing Muller and most of his coaching staff exactly one week after his promotion to GM.

Muller was 80-80-27 in three seasons with the Hurricanes, who haven’t made the playoffs since 2009. Carolina finished 13th in the 16-team Eastern Conference this season.
