AFA and CU football scrap ends in a Boulder court

BOULDER – Former University of Colorado offensive lineman Alex Lewis pleaded guilty to third-degree assault for his role in a fight in May that left an Air Force Academy cadet unconscious.

The Daily Camera reported the 21-year-old, who transferred to Nebraska, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor Friday as part of a deal with prosecutors. Four other charges were dropped, including two felony counts of second-degree assault.

Boulder police arrested Lewis and CU quarterback Jordan Webb on May 11 after witnesses said the men were involved in a fight with 22-year-old cadet Lee Bussey.

Webb, who originally was charged with second-degree assault, struck a deal in September and pleaded guilty to third-degree assault. He was sentenced to two years of probation and 20 days on a work crew.

Hirscher wins again, while Ligety settles for third

ALTA BADIA, Italy – Two-time defending overall World Cup champion Marcel Hirscher won the challenging giant slalom on the Gran Risa course with two solid runs Sunday and attributed his victory to a fixed screw in his equipment setup.

Favorite Ted Ligety finished third at the site of one of his most memorable victories and all of a sudden no longer looks dominant with the Sochi Olympics less than 50 days away.

Hirscher, an Austrian, clocked a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 37.45 seconds for his second consecutive GS win after a victory in Val d’Isère, France, last weekend.

Alexis Pinturault of France finished second, 0.35 seconds behind, and Ligety, the American who won by a massive margin last year, was 0.41 back.

Overall World Cup leader Aksel Lund Svindal was 13th and maintains a 95-point lead over Hirscher in the standings.

Bode Miller failed to advance from the first run, which he finished in 40th. Miller fell on his hip midway down, recovered, but then stood up out of a tuck before he concluded a wild run.

After Christmas, the circuit will resume with a downhill in Bormio, Italy, next Sunday. Several top racers – including Ligety and Miller – will compete Monday in the Alpine Rockfest, an exhibition event at the Paganella resort in Andalo.

Munich city World Cup event canceled for lack of snow

MUNICH – The World Cup Munich city event Jan. 1 has been called off for lack of snow.

Parallel slalom World Cup races for men and women had been scheduled, but unseasonably mild weather forced organizers to give up.

The races were slated to be held at the Olympic park from the 1972 summer games.

Liechtenstein’s Wierather extends her overall lead

VAL D’ISÈRE, France – World Cup leader Tina Wierather of Liechtenstein protected her lead from the first run to win the first giant slalom race of her career Sunday, her second victory of the season and third of her fast-improving career.

Wierather leads overall with 595 points from Lara Gut (568), who finished second, and Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany (535).

Julia Mancuso of the United States finished 24th, but she did not finish the second run.

After winning a super-G race at St. Moritz last weekend, the 24-year-old Wierather secured her third career win and 13th podium finish with an overall time of 2 minutes, 24.10 seconds.

Wierather was 0.75 seconds clear of Gut, who was third after the first run, and 0.95 ahead of Sweden’s Maria Pietilae-Holmner, who had been second.

Italian Federica Brignone was fourth, ahead of the former World Cup winner Hoefl-Riesch.

Gut has four World Cup wins this season and five podiums but has failed to finish the last two GS races.

World slalom champion and 18-year-old Coloradoan Mikaela Shiffrin was eighth, improving from her 12th-place finish in the World Cup slalom at Courchevel on Tuesday.
