Park outlasts Matthew to win LPGA Championship

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Inbee Park birdied the third hole of a sudden-death playoff with Catriona Matthew to win the rain-delayed LPGA Championship on Sunday.

Park made a 20-foot putt on the par-4 18th to go 2-for-2 in LPGA Tour majors this season. She rebounded in the playoff after relinquishing a three-shot lead with a final-round 3-over 75. The top-ranked South Korean star bogeyed three of her final five holes in regulation.

The 42-year-old Matthew, from Scotland, shot a bogey-free 68 to match Park at 5-under 283 at Locust Hill.

Frost doesn’t freeze up down stretch at Regions Tradition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – David Frost never flinched in his showdown with Hall of Famer Fred Couples even with his first major championship on the line and a late rain delay to ponder the stakes.

Frost parred the final two holes to hold on for a one-stroke victory over Couples on Sunday in the Regions Tradition, the South African’s first major title in 17 attempts on the Champions Tour.

Both birdied No. 16 after play resumed with the sun shining after a delay of 1 hour, 8 minutes for lightning in a round played at times in driving rain.

Couples and Frost both shot 4-under 68, and Frost finished at 16-under 272.

Ball spins the right way for English in first PGA Tour win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Harris English won the St. Jude Classic on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, birdieing two of the final three holes to hold off Phil Mickelson and Scott Stallings by two strokes. The 23-year-old former Georgia star in his second year on tour survived a final round where he had six birdies and five bogeys. He finished with a 1-under 69 for a 12-under 268 total.

In Atzenbrugg, Austria, Joost Luiten of the Netherlands won the Lyoness Open by two shots for his second European Tour title.

Froome wins Dauphine, sets sights on Tour de France

RISOUL, France – Chris Froome of Britain won the Criterium du Dauphine on Sunday and immediately set his sights on the Tour de France.

Froome was second in the eighth and final stage behind winner Alessandro De Marchi of Italy. It was enough to extend his overall lead and make him the third consecutive British winner of the race. Bradley Wiggins won last year and in 2011.

Wiggins, his Sky Procycling teammate, won the Tour last year, with Froome finishing second. But with Wiggins pulling out of the showcase race, Froome is the clear favorite. The Tour starts June 29.

Vettel turns the fastest laps at the Canadian Grand Prix

MONTREAL – Sebastian Vettel was so far ahead of the pack in the Canadian Grand Prix that only the walls and the curbs were in his way.The three-time defending Formula One champion improved his chances at a fourth straight season title Sunday, surviving an early brush with a wall and late trouble in Turn 1 to earn his first victory at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Vettel’s Red Bull left from pole position and led almost the entire way to finish 14.4 seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari.

Bayne and new bride enjoy the spoils of victory in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa – Trevor Bayne spent the first weekend of his marriage stuck in a rain-soaked racetrack in the middle of Iowa.

The 22-year-old newlywed made the most of his unorthodox honeymoon, taking his bride to victory lane for the first time.

Bayne rallied to win the rain-plagued NASCAR Nationwide race in Iowa on Sunday, his second career win in the series.

The victory capped a memorable week for Bayne, who got married Tuesday in North Carolina.
