Spring storm to bring rain, snow to Southwest Colorado

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for eastern Utah and western Colorado.

Beginning Wednesday afternoon, showers and thunderstorms will become widespread as a front moves through the region. Snow levels are expected to drop and accumulations are possible as early as Wednesday afternoon. The chance for snow in the high country will continue Wednesday night through Friday morning.

By Thursday evening, snow levels could drop as low as 6,000 feet in elevation across northern Colorado and Utah, with the Durango area seeing a 70% chance of rain showers and up to 1 inch of snow overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Rain showers will continue in La Plata County on Friday and Saturday, with only a slight chance of rain through Sunday and Monday.

The majority of snow will fall in the central and southern mountains in Colorado above 9,000 feet Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Telluride and Silverton areas could receive up to 15 inches of snow. The chance for snow will persist through the weekend, mainly across the San Juan Mountains.

Wolf Creek Pass is under a winter storm warning until 6 a.m. Friday, with snow accumulation expected to be 15 to 20 inches. Travel could become difficult over Wolf Creek Pass.
