The St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, in Rotary Park, 1565 East Second Ave.

The blessing of the animals will take place from 10 to 11:15 a.m. The event will also feature an Animal Services Expo from 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. and picnic from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

St. Francis of Assisi, who died in 1228, was known for his love of animals and the environment. The blessing of the animals is a centuries-old tradition for Roman Catholics and others around the world.

All animal owners must follow local leash and pet-waste laws. Cats and small animals must be in crates or pet carriers. Troublesome pets or animals unable to calm down will be asked to leave. Participants should not bring animals larger than a medium-large dog. Stuffed animals are welcome.

No livestock or wildlife are allowed. Owners of pet birds, reptiles, rodents and exotic pets must call for permission.

Area veterinarians, pet stores as well as public and private businesses that specialize in animal services will be part of the expo. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and the First Presbyterian Church are sponsoring the event.
