Right on, Nick Tarasewicz (Herald, Jan. 4)! No Child Left Behind and current standardized tests have resulted in “teaching to the test” and have undermined our educational system. Each year, we seem surprised that our students do not measure up to those in other industrialized countries, and yet we continue using the same methods to educate our children.
I think it is time we re-examine this approach to educating our youths. In the process, let’s encourage music, art, free time and other activities that enhance creativity, resourcefulness and enthusiasm. Teaching children how to learn and encouraging them to want to continue learning throughout their lives will benefit our society.
