Standing up to cancer

Stand-up paddle boarders make their way down the Animas River on Sunday for “A Paddle and a Pint for the Cure,” a fundraiser for local residents coping with cancer. Francesca Shaw, an event organizer, said 30 people participated. This is the first year the event was held, and it all came together in only six weeks, she said. Organizers hoped to attract 20 people and raise $500. They exceeded that by raising $1,740, Shaw said. All of the proceeds will go to the Women’s Health Coalition.
