State agency offers hunting help

Parks and Wildlife website has lots of resources
“Elk Hunting University” is a section of Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s website with information, articles and videos about one of the state’s most sought after big-game animals.

Hunters looking for information to help with their big-game adventure will find plenty of material on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website, http://wildlife.state.co.us. The information includes how to apply for a license, where to hunt, tips for hunting elk, detailed maps, how to field dress a big-game animal and much more.

A popular feature of the website is “Elk Hunting University.” Jim Bulger, hunter outreach coordinator, has worked with hunters, hunt masters, biologists and field officers to compile a series of articles that address details about how to hunt elk.

“We’re providing hunters with helpful information that will make their hunts more enjoyable and productive,” Bulger said. “These articles are not just aimed at novices; even veteran hunters will benefit from these.”

Among article topics are scouting, using maps, ballistics, how to select a hunting area and archery hunting. Visit http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/ElkHuntingUniversity.

Bulger also will be presenting a free workshop, “Elk Hunting 101,” from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Parks and Wildlife Hunter Education Building in Denver, 6060 Broadway. The workshop is limited to 100 participants. Register by email at wildlife.neoutreach@state.co.us or call (303) 291-7804 and leave a message with name(s), address and phone number.

Also available on the website are hunting guides for each of the agency’s four regions: Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest. Available as PDFs on the website and in printed booklet form, the guides provide statistics, descriptions of the game management units, or GMUs, and hunting tips.

The website also offers statistical tables that provide complete harvest details for all big-game species, including method of take and a season-by-season breakdown.

Hunters also can check if they’ve drawn a license and look at preference point tables for each GMU and season.

Among other information available on the website are hunting regulations, the big-game brochure, explanations of Ranching for Wildlife, leftover license information, information about all Colorado hunting opportunities and descriptions of various species.
