State Patrol says bicyclist pulled in front of SUV

Neil Hannum moved to new hospital
On June 26, Neil Hannum, of Durango, was riding his bicycle when he collided with an SUV. He is recovering at a rehabilitation hospital in Englewood that specializes in traumatic brain injuries.

A bicyclist who was critically injured last month on U.S. Highway 550 pulled in front of the SUV that collided with him, the Colorado State Patrol said Wednesday.

“Sounds like the bicycle may have pulled out in front of the vehicle,” Trooper Nate Reid wrote in an email Wednesday after speaking with the trooper investigating the incident. “The vehicle had the right of way.”

On June 26, Durango resident Neil Hannum was hit while traveling south in the left-turn lane of U.S. Highway 550 at the Trimble Lane intersection.

According to the State Patrol report, Hannum moved right from the left turn lane into the center lane, and the front of the SUV, a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander, collided with his bicycle. The driver of the SUV was identified as 16-year-old Durango resident Kylie Kouyoumjian.

Hannum, 52, was airlifted to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood in critical condition, suffering from injuries that include a traumatic brain injury. According to the State Patrol report, Hannum was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Scott Kurlander, a family friend, told The Durango Herald last week Hannum was taken out of the intensive care unit, and although it will be a lengthy convalescence, he should fully recover.

Kurlander said Wednesday that Hannum was moved from St. Anthony’s to Craig Hospital in Englewood.

Hannum is widely known as The Chip Peddler, which is also the name of his local tortilla chip business, and he is an active member of the Durango community.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a GoFundMe campaign to help the Hannum family with medical costs had raised $20,503.
