Station robbed on New Year’s

Durango police looking for suspect

An ExxonMobil service station, at 2501 Main Avenue, was robbed around 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Rita Warfield, patrol sergeant with Durango Police Department, said a man described as wearing a hooded black coat, gloves and gray scarf concealing his face approached the counter at the station with a handful of items for purchase.

He then asked the clerk for the contents of the register, but did not brandish a weapon in the process, she said.

The clerk obliged with the request, and was then asked to wait in a backroom for 10 minutes before calling the police.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Warfield said. “Nobody’s life is worth any amount of money.”

The suspect, described as 5-foot 9-inches tall, left on foot in an unknown direction with cash and store items. Because of the time lapse between the hold-up and when police were alerted via the store’s panic button, the culprit was able to leave the general area, she said.

Warfield was unable to disclose the monetary amount stolen.

As of Wednesday evening, the Durango Police Department was unable to locate the suspect, though detectives are working on capturing an image from the station’s surveillance video.
