Stillhouse Junkies release official video premiere

Local group gets caught up in the ‘Heat of the Moment’

Durango band

The band – Cody Tinnin on vocals, bass and banjo, Fred Kosak on vocals, guitar and mandolin, and Alissa Wolf on vocals, fiddle and guitar – has covered Asia’s 1982 hit “Heat of the Moment.”

Kosak said the idea for the cover came from playing in the production of “Rock of Ages” at Durango Arts Center a couple of years ago.

Stillhouse Junkies filmed the video for their cover of Asia’s “Heat of the Moment” at Durango’s Sideshow Emporium.

“It was all ’80s kind of hair-band music, and my friend Ted Moore, who works at iAM MUSIC, we would ask each other the next day what song was stuck in our head of all the very earwormy kind of songs in the show, and it was almost always ‘Heat of the Moment’ – there’s something about the riff in that song, and it kind of stayed in my head, and I thought we should cover this,” he said.

Kosak said he searched online to see if any other string bands had covered “Heat of the Moment,” and when he couldn’t find anything, the challenge was set.

“We didn’t want to do something that had already been done by a similar band,” he said.

The band rarely does covers, so when they do they choose wisely, they said.

“A part of it, too, we’re an original music band, we write originals. But when we do a cover, it needs to be a special cover. We want to make it our own, we don’t want to do something a hundred other bands have done,” Wolf said. “It took us a long time to actually – we tabled it for a while, it was not a priority, but then when we made it a thing, it was super-fun.”

“And it’s really recognizable, too,” Tinnin said. “People know right off the bat what song it is, which is cool.”

As for using Sideshow Emporium as the location for the video, Tinnin said the feel of the shop lent itself to the cover.

“I felt like the look of (owner Heather Narwid) her store, to me, she has a lot of ’80s kind of vintage stuff,” he said. “And the ’80s was the decade of the mall, and to me, that kind of made sense.”

And, not only did Narwid lend the band her shop, she offered to style them for the video as well.

“She came in on one of the days she was closed, so we didn’t want to ask her, we were just happy to have her space to use, but then she was super-excited about it and fun and cool and was super-down to help, especially with Alissa,” Tinnin said. “Alissa had the best outfits.”

This is the third video Stillhouse Junkies has kept local: The video was shot at Durango’s Sideshow Emporium using local videographers and audio engineers. The audio was recorded by Jeff Jones of Triple J Productions in Durango as well.

The keep-it-local principle is important to the band, Wolf said.

“Every time we do a video, we’re trying to bring in local (help). We want to highlight Durango and local business and local people because that’s where we’re from,” she said. “It’s Durango pride for me. I want to be like, ‘This is my home.’ All the string bands are from the Front range, and we’re from Durango.”
