Stolen flags, banner will be replaced

As the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango, I was deeply disappointed and saddened the third time in the last month, when our church signage was vandalized.

The first two times, the flag that flies outside of our fellowship doors as a symbol of welcome to all was stolen. This third time, the banner, affixed to the front of our sanctuary, below our stained glass was ripped down and stolen.

The banner proclaimed our values and beliefs that, we are connected, stronger together, love’s hands in the world, called to create justice and responsible for one another and the earth. Our flag is a symbol of the religious principle that affirms the inherent worth and dignity of every person. It calls upon us to lift up and welcome those of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

Our faith also teaches tolerance for others of different religious understanding. We continue to take seriously this hostility toward our values. We will not be silenced from expressing our truth in respectful ways. We will replace our flag and banner and continue to fly this symbol of hospitality to all. We are planning a flag giveaway Oct. 30. Please check our website so you can pick up yours.
