Storm cancels schools, closes offices

Snow continues falling Thursday in downtown Bayfield, including on the huge evergreens at Calvary Presbyterian Church on Mill Street.

Got snow?

Yes, we do. Bayfield and Ignacio schools were closed Thursday, along with tribal offices and the Ignacio Community Library.

About eight inches of snow has fallen in downtown Bayfield in the past few days. A winter storm watch went into effect at 6 p.m. Thursday and runs through Friday afternoon. There is an 80 percent chance of snow continuing today, and a 10 percent chance this evening, according to the National Weather Service office in Grand Junction. The storm is supposed to move out later tonight, with partly sunny skies and a high of 27 on Saturday. More snow could return on Saturday, with a 20 percent chance of precipitation.

A winter storm warning was in effect through midnight Wednesday. All after-school activities were cancelled Wednesday in Ignacio and Bayfield.

Sunday is locals day at Purgatory, with $45 adult lift tickets. Part of the ticket proceeds benefit the Be FRANK Foundation, Trails 2000, La Plata Family Centers and Heart Safe La Plata. Coupons are required and are available at skipurg.com/benefit day. Be FRANK offers music and outdoor education programs to youth in Bayfield and Ignacio, and the Bayfield Family Center operates the after-school program and the food backpack programs at Bayfield Elementary School.
