A storm is expected to move into the region over the weekend, bringing 6 to 10 inches of snow to the high country.
“We are watching a storm coming in,” said Meteorologist Andrew Lyons with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. “Saturday into Sunday there is good potential for widespread snow across the mountain areas.”
In town, Durango could see a dusting of snow when temperatures dip below 30 degrees Saturday night, but it isn’t likely to stick around.
Daytime highs are expected to hit the upper 40s and low 50s throughout the weekend and into early next week, Lyons said.
City officials have yet to roll out the fleet of snowplows to clear the roads – instead, road crews are taking advantage of the above-average temperatures to seal cracks in Durango’s streets.
That could change soon, though, as meteorologists have their eye on a second, stronger storm on the horizon.
“That storm looks fairly significant right now,” Lyons said. “It’s tracking to the south, and when we see that, it favors the southern San Juans and Durango for snowfall.”
He cautioned that because the storm is five days out, it’s possible the forecast could change.
“We are seeing the storm hitting Tuesday night through Wednesday,” Lyons said. “It looks fairly potent, but we won’t know the snow amounts until about three days out.”
