Subdivision planned along Rim Drive

Planning Commission OKs rezoning
The Durango Planning Commission approved a request Monday to rezone a property along Rim Drive across from Hillcrest Golf Course to accommodate a 10-home subdivision.

A 10-home subdivision is planned for Rim Drive across from Hillcrest Golf Course.

The subdivision near the Tierra Vista and Villas at Hillcrest was previously planned for 15 homes, but it was scaled back to 10 after an archaeological site was discovered, according to city documents.

The homes will share driveways to keep the cultural resources undisturbed.

The Durango Planning Commission approved a request Monday to rezone the property to a planned development from low-density residential. Only one home is now on the property.

The planned development process will allow more flexibility for lot sizes.

The Durango City Council must approve the new zoning. If that hurdle is cleared, then several layers of review would remain.

Members of the Planning Commission suggested that secondary-units could be built on the lots, and serve as rental units.

But there are no requirements to do so.

In addition to homes, a sidewalk and trees are planned along the north side of Rim Drive, according to city documents.
