Sugar Creek will play its spin on bluegrass at Ska Brewing

Sugar Creek, a Durango-based band that bills its music as “a bluegrass spin on American folk, alternative country and pop,” will play from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ska Brewing. In the past, Sugar Creek has played at the Durango Bluegrass Meltdown. Here’s how each musician describes himself or herself:

Anna McBrayer, who plays the walkabout dulcimer and guitar and sings: “She was introduced to the Walkabout dulcimer in 2009, and she hasn’t shaken the draw of its lonesome Appalachian sound ever since.”

Jim Harvey, who plays the guitar: “... plays whatever guitar ends up in his hands that day. ... He’s currently on guitar number 538, and is absolutely certain that number 539 will be ‘the one.’”

Charlotte Overby, who plays the standup bass and sings: “... she helped form (a band in Missouri called) the People’s Republic of Klezmerica, infamous purveyors of “raucous, dirty-fingernails klezmer from the Midwest.”

Dan Peha, who plays the banjo and sings: “Dan has been mesmerized by the sound of the banjo ever since he was a kid listening to Earl Scruggs and Pete Seeger. He got him a 5 string about a dozen years ago and has been picking and jamming with folks ever since. He was part of the bluegrass/soul group “The Magpies” for 5 years.
