Summer Food Service Program available

Durango School District 9-R’s Summer Food Service Program will begin June 5. Free sack lunches will be handed out to any child age 0 to 18. People age 19 and older who have a mental or physical disability (as determined by a state or local educational agency) and participate during the school year in a public or private nonprofit school program may also receive free meals. The program’s last day is July 27.

Lunch distribution will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Santa Rita Park in Durango. Any child can receive a lunch, regardless of meal benefit eligibility or school district enrollment.

The Summer Food Service Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services. The Colorado Department of Education’s Office of School Nutrition approves sponsor applications, conducts training, monitors program operations and processes program payments.
