Summer isn’t just fun and games for kids anymore.
Schools now offer remedial classes in the basics for students who have failed and need the credit to move ahead. Others can enroll in the classes, as well.
Here are the summer school offerings in La Plata County.
Durango Education Center
Durango Education Center has classes for adults or teen dropouts studying for any of three versions of a high school equivalency certificate.
Classes meet from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at The Commons building, 701 Camino del Rio, from July 8 to Aug. 14.
English as a second language will be taught on the same days at the same place from 5 to 8 p.m.
Information is available at 385-4354, ext. 101.
Durango School District
Julie Popp at Durango School District 9-R said efforts will focus on credit recovery for high school students. Core academic classes in math, English, science and social studies will be offered so students who failed a class may regain credit.
The extra effort of past years that focused on third-, sixth- and eighth-grade students no longer will be given in the summer. Now, each school will provide extra attention to its struggling students throughout the academic year.
The district has partners that offer enrichment courses, among them the Durango Public Library, Powerhouse Science Center, Southwest eSchool (a San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services program) and Durango Nature Studies.
The credit recovery classes will be held at Durango High School on weekdays from June 3 to 27. Sessions will be from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with only one session allowed per student because of limited seating. A student who wants to take a second class must find it in the other session.
Similar recovery classes can be accessed through San Juan BOCES.
The charge is a nonrefundable fee of $150 for the first course, with additional courses at $75.
Information and registration is available through the DHS counseling office at 259-1630, ext. 2309.
Bayfield School District
Bayfield School District is offering “credit recovery” classes in the basics for high school students who already have been identified. The classes will be done online at Colorado Online or Southwest eSchool.
Targeted tutoring for elementary and middle school students who need added instruction will be provided for students identified by teachers.
At La Plata Family Center, the summer program focuses on activities, but there will be an academic component.
Call 385-4747 for information.
Ignacio School District
Ignacio School District JT-11 will offer English and math classes for students who have to make up credit and other interested students.
Classes are scheduled from June 2 to 27, but students who can pass exams earlier can reduce seat time. Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to noon.
Cost is $150, but the fee is waived for students who had 85 percent attendance or better. The fee for students who live out of the district is $250.
Information is available at 563-0515.
