Sidewalk construction will resume in Durango after Labor Day, another sign the summer is over.
Unlike the spring, when construction was concentrated on Main Avenue, this time work will target the side streets along Main. The first target is the streets between Main and the alley between Main and East Second Avenue, according to a city news release.
Construction, which is expected to require two weeks per side street to complete, will begin Tuesday in the east 100 block of 12th Street. That block will be closed to vehicle traffic from Main to the alley.
Work will move south, continuing on the side streets on the east side of Main to east Seventh Street.
Construction then will shift to the west side streets, between Main Avenue and Narrow Gauge, heading north to 12th Street.
As with the spring construction, the city’s contractor, FCI, will meet with businesses a week before initiating construction in their blocks. Streets will be closed to vehicle traffic, but barricades will be placed to direct pedestrians to businesses.
Downtown sidewalk reconstruction began in March and continued into early June, stopping in time for tourist season.
The project was expected to cost about $1.9 million, which will come out of the city’s general fund. A $500,000 energy grant also is going toward the project.
The Business Improvement District has the timeline for construction and can provide businesses with information about the weeks their side streets will be closed. Visit www.downtowndurango.org.
