Support group can help with Parkinson’s

This is an open invitation to those of us with Parkinson’s Disease in Durango and surrounding area to take action concerning our well-being. When I was diagnosed eight years ago with Parkinson’s, I heard “death sentence.” Like many others, I relied just on medication to make me normal again.

Parkinson’s is a progressive disease with no cure in sight. There is, however, something that can be done that is simple and effective to slow it’s progression and improve existing symptoms – exercise!

There is local support for us with this challenge of Parkinson’s. I am inspired by meeting others who are currently fighting through their daily lives with the symptoms. This support group meets from 1 to 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive. There are also free exercise classes at Mercy Medical Center and the Durango Recreational Center for those with Parkinson’s. These classes are currently attended by too few people and it is my focus to make public these opportunities for both social interaction as well as inspiration, motivation and positive results.

One of the biggest limits to what is possible for us is our own attitudes. I’ve seen a person with Parkinson’s ride a bike to Silverton in the annual Iron Horse Race. I’ve seen people straighten their posture, improve their balance and increase their strength. That is only a few examples of meeting the challenge and taking a stand for our well-being.
