Support healthy school meals for all

There are two items on the Nov. 4 ballot – Propositions LL and MM – on which we must all vote ‘yes.’ It is crucial to those Durango children who need us most. I was shocked to learn that healthy school meals (breakfast and lunch) will no longer be provided for free for to all public school students. As we all know, proper nutrition is essential to children’s health and development. It gives them the energy to do their best in school. It lets them know they are as deserving of the very best meals as everyone else.

Imagine how a child who is rightfully receiving a healthy breakfast and lunch will feel when that is no longer available to them. Their classmates who are in a more fortunate position economically will be able to afford to purchase meals, but they will not. Imagine the heartbreak their parents will endure – parents who do not have that greatest gift of being able to send their children to school everyday knowing they will receive a healthy breakfast and lunch.

I know many are incensed that our children’s right to good meals is even in question. We need to get the vote out – to vote ‘Yes’ on:

  • Proposition LL – which funds Healthy School Meals For All through the end of the 2025 – 2026 school year; and
  • Proposition MM – which keeps HSMA going and helps schools purchase locally-sourced food and increases wages and training for cafeteria workers.
