Beavers play a pivotal role in Colorado ecosystems. They strengthen wetlands and streams, in turn creating conditions for trout and other wildlife to thrive. Colorado Trout Unlimited recognizes the value beavers provide; however, beaver management is nuanced. We believe Colorado needs a thoughtful, flexible approach to managing beavers, not a ban on taking them.
Recently, the Colorado House Agriculture, Water, and Natural Resources Committee held a long hearing on HB26-1323. We appreciate the work that sponsors put in months before the legislative session started, as well as the perspectives and passion of the proponents. However, we could not support the bill, as we don’t believe the proposal contained conservation methods backed by science.
We also recognize the extensive stakeholder process Colorado Parks and Wildlife conducted over many months to develop its Beaver Conservation and Management Strategy. The plan was published in February, and we want to see the strategy implemented before passing additional legislation.
We are deeply appreciative of Rep. Katie Stewart’s commitment to evidence-based conservation with her opposition to this bill. Thank you for recognizing the delicate balance of Colorado’s ecosystems and supporting CPW’s robust plan.
