Support the Durango Discovery Museum

How wonderful for the public schools to have generous friends such as the Katz family. It is our good fortune that private citizens, such as the Katzes, have stepped up in support of Durango School District 9-R.

It reminded me of another unique Durango educational resource that receives no financial support from taxpayers of the state or city. I speak of the Durango Discovery Museum. This civic jewel is located on the banks of the Animas River in the renovated building that housed the steam-powered dynamos that once provided electricity to Durango. It is valuable not just to Durango, but to the entire Four Corners Area. Community-enriching programs bring science to students in venues throughout Southwest Colorado providing science curriculums to area schools, internships for students, programs in partnership with the Southern Ute Tribe and so much more!

Adults can enjoy weekly trivia nights and the Pub Science programs, combining the best local brews with fascinating and enlightening presentations by experts in their scientific fields.

As the host of a world-class science museum, Durango is unique among cities of our size. What a wonderful gift it would be to our city, to our children and to our schools to purchase a membership for your family. Or buy a membership for a relative or a neighbor. You might consider sponsoring a membership for a family not as fortunate as yours.

It has taken years of work and sacrifice by civic-minded people to bring the Durango Discovery Museum into being – but the museum won’t survive without the continuing support of people like us.

Who knows, perhaps someday even the Durango City Council will see fit to contribute a few dollars to ensure that this gem of civic engagement remains a center of science-education adventure and a source of pride for our Durango in years to come.

If you haven’t yet, please make it a point to visit our city’s science museum or stop by the website at www.durangodiscovery.org.

Send a Christmas present to the future generations of Durango. Support your Durango Discovery Museum.
