Surveillance shows bike theft near First Southwest Bank of Durango

Bicycle left unlocked by bank employee
A man suspected of walking off with a woman’s unlocked bicycle was caught on video surveillance Wednesday at First Southwest Bank in downtown Durango.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man suspected of walking off with a woman’s bike earlier this week in downtown Durango.

The incident occurred about 9 a.m. Wednesday near First Southwest Bank of Durango, 600 East Second Ave.

A bank employee parked the bike in front of the bank without locking it, said Cmdr. Ray Shupe, spokesman with the Durango Police Department.

A man was observed on camera walking by the bank and taking the bike, Shupe said. Images released Thursday by the Durango Police Department show the suspect wearing black pants, a striped ski hat, and a maroon puffy coat with a large emblem stitched across the left chest. The bicycle is described as a red Linus cruiser-style bike, valued at $350.

Shupe reminded residents to lock their bikes to help prevent theft. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 247-1112 or emergency dispatch at 385-2900.
