Survey: Have you been impacted by the loss of health insurance subsidies in 2026?

(AP file)

Rising health care costs and skyrocketing insurance rates have left many Americans facing tough choices.

At the end of 2025, Affordable Care Act subsidies expired, causing insurance premiums to spike for some Americans. Experts predict the higher costs will push millions more people nationwide to go without coverage.

In rural Colorado – including La Plata County – residents are more likely to be uninsured than those in urban areas. About 10% of rural residents currently lack health insurance, according to the Colorado Office of Rural Health.

The Durango Herald wants to hear from residents: Has the loss of ACA subsidies affected your health insurance coverage? If you’ve chosen to go without insurance – or are struggling to afford it – tell us why.
