Swaziland missionaries visiting Ignacio tomorrow

Daran and Teres Tehmeyer work with children and families in Swaziland, a country on the southeastern coast of Africa. They will visit Ignacio on Saturday.

Dancing Spirit Community Arts Center will host special guests Daran and Teresa Rehmeyer, missionaries from Swaziland, Africa on Saturday. The Rehmeyers have served in Swaziland since 2005 and the main focus of their work centers around providing health care for desperately underserved children. The Rehmeyers will share their work in Africa and plans to use art to bring people out of extreme poverty.

The Reymeyers are working with the center in Ignacio to to start a glass studio in Swaziland.

"Poverty and lack of opportunity kill hope," the Rehmeyers write. "Providing opportunities for people to earn an income opens all kinds of possibilities for these families: schooling, food, health care, investment, business re-investment, clothing. The Kudvumisa Foundation looks for local resources (skills or natural) that can be developed for markets external to the local community." So far more than 150 families have participated in programs to utilize sewing skills and local resources such as marula nuts and moringa, and they hope soon, glass.

The event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the center, located at 115 Ute St. in Ignacio on the former Ignacio Elementary School campus.
