A recent meet helped Durango Swim Club athletes become more hardy and well-rounded swimmers. They competed at the 2014 Western Slope Individual Medley Extreme meet May 18-19 in Glenwood Springs.
In addition to being a regular meet, the IMX featured four challenges athletes could gain points in. Most DSC athletes chose the distance challenge, which is composed of the 500-yard freestyle, 1,000-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and 1,650-yard freestyle.
DSC’s Haley Benjamin (13), Claire Larson (14), Iain McCourt (14) and Quinn Schmidt (11) were the only competitors to finish all four events in the meet.
Steevie Delio (13) swam the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard IM, 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard IM.
Joci Earl (14) competed in the 200-yard IM, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.
“I am working on having the kids swim the individual medley and the distance events,” DSC head coach Suzanne Schieltz said in an email to The Durango Herald. “The more versatile the swimmer the more well-rounded they are.”
