Switchback Taco permanently closed Sunday after seven years at 741 Main Ave. in downtown Durango.

“It has been an amazing seven years, and we are now permanently closed,” a Switchback’s voicemail says. “We will see you in a couple of weeks for something new and exciting. Thank you so much for your support over the years.”

Owners Lindsay and Dan Gearig opened the Mexican-inspired street food restaurant in 2019 in the space formerly occupied by Mountain Taco. The two previously operated food trucks in Detroit, where they specialized in tacos and macaroni and cheese.

An Instagram post published Thursday on the shop’s page also made a vague mention of the new project being headed up by Switchback’s owners.

“Thru (sic) much consideration and with our leadership team, we decided It’s time to sunset Switchback to pursue a project we’ve wanted to realize for a long time,” the post read. “... We’ll be reopening in a few weeks and can’t wait to have you back in to celebrate this next chapter with us, with a fresh renovation and a concept that has deepened our passion for full service restaurants and the vital role they play in our culture.”

Further details were not provided, and the owners did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

“We’ll keep ya posted on exact dates and juicy details as they come,” the post said.

Switchback became known for its friendly environment and affordable Mexican-style eats – though prices rose slightly over time.

When the restaurant first opened, tacos went for $2.50 each, elote for $3.50 and a house margarita for $6. Just before the shop closed, three tacos were going for $12, a cup of elote for $5.25 and a house margarita for $8.50 outside of happy hour.

The closing announcement on Instagram drew mixed reactions from customers.

“My wife is devastated (I as well),” one commenter wrote. “The one spot we’d visit when we arrived in town. Delicious birria.”

“Im (sic) so excited for the rebirth of the restaurant and space!” another wrote. “I know it’s in good hands with you and your team!”

The shop was shuttered Monday with paper covering most of the windows. A construction crew could be seen working on the bar inside.
