I’m going to vote “No” on Question 1A. Please hear me out.
My No. 1 reason is we don’t need to decide right now. This tax does not sunset until December 2018. I want more time to digest the financial impact of the new sewer rates, along with all the many other needs and/or wants my community is laying before me. We have a wide range of issues that will be competing for my dollars.
My No. 2 reason is that I want options. The proposed ballot feels too myopic. Why? As an example, we agreed to this ½-cent tax primarily to pay for a $14 million bond to build the recreation center and extend the trail. This tax has generated well over $3 million per year in the last few years. In some ways, lucky for us, it way outpaced what we thought we needed. In other ways, our city was restricted with respect to how the money could be spent. Sometimes that restriction is not in our favor.
Please join me in voting “No” on Question 1A, simply asking for more time and more options to consider. I think that is only fair.
