Talk about town: Former Durangoan competes in ‘Titan Games’ on NBC

Matthew Welbourn, a former Durangoan and a Fort Lewis College graduate, battled two brothers Thursday night on NBC’s new game show, “Titan Games.”

Matthew Welbourn competed in NBC’s new game show, “Titan Games.”

Hosted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “Titan Games” pits contestants against each other in head-to-head competitions of strength and physical skill.

Welbourn won his first matchup of the night against Kyle Lucas in the “Off the Rails” challenge that required both men to pull a weighted sled.

With the victory, Welbourn advanced to the night’s final test, a grueling climb and descent of Mount Olympus, against Kyle’s older brother, Tyler Lucas.

Lucas took an early lead on the ascent over multiple obstacles to light the torch at the summit first. On the way down, with competitors facing new obstacles, Welbourn was unable to catch Lucas, who won the night’s competition.

Welbourn, who now lives on the Front Range, did get to feature his impersonation of Arnold Schwarzenegger more than once during the show.

In a previous interview, he said, “It was just a crazy experience, especially from being a small-town guy then going into a situation like that where you’re competing on national television and in front of a live audience. It was just a surreal experience.”
