Talk about town: Locomotive No. 476 will reappear on rails to Silverton

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad announced that, after years of repair and restoration, Locomotive No. 476, a K-28 steam engine, will return to the rails Feb. 17-18 for the 2018 winter photography train.

“The D&SNGRR roundhouse crew did a tremendous job, and devoted thousands of hours over several years, to repair No. 476 and get it into tip-top condition.” Al Harper, head of Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, said in a news release. “The addition of No. 476 to the D&SNGRR fleet gives us six locomotives in the rotation, and provides much-needed operational depth for greater engine scheduling and maintenance flexibility.”

The engine was originally constructed by American Locomotive Co. in 1923 and serviced the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad during its heyday. By 1969, No. 476 and its sister engines were the primary motive power on the Silverton line, and it hauled the first passenger train to Silverton in 1981. The locomotive was taken out of service in 1999.
