Talk about town: Post office ramps up stamp sale for breast cancer research

The Breast Cancer Research Stamp was first issued in 1998.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Durango Post Office will increase its fundraising efforts to support breast cancer research through a stamp sale.

Since it was first issued in 1998, the semi-postal Breast Cancer Research Stamp has raised more than $82.9 million for breast cancer research programs nationwide. More advanced treatments have been developed and breast cancer survival rates have increased in that time.

Stamps can be purchased at Durango Post Office, 222 W. Eighth St., or at www.usps.com/stamps/breast-cancer-research.htm.

Although the United States Postal Service will emphasize the fundraiser during October, the Breast Cancer Research Stamp can be purchased year-round at post offices and online.

For every 60-cent stamp sold, 11 cents will be donated to support breast cancer research.

Proceeds go to the National Institute of Health and Medical Research.
