Anyone wondering what that tall structure is being built north of the Hermosa gas station won’t receive much help from its name: “barndominium.”
According to La Plata County’s Planning Department, the structure is a single-family residence with an attached accessory dwelling unit and garage, all contained in one barn-like building. Think “barn” and “condominium.”
The project received all the proper county permitting, county planners say. It’s unclear how tall the structure is, but the Animas Valley has a height restriction of 30 feet, so it’s not higher than that.
According to Rigid Global Buildings, a “barndominium” is a steel building converted into a living space. Using steel as opposed to wood has many benefits, the company says, such as being able to build more quickly and a lower chance of the structure rotting.
